Distant (Draco x Reader) Part 2
Part 1
Writer notes: I’m so happy that so many of you liked part one. I was so shocked at the amount of notes it got, and the incredibly nice messages some people sent to me about it. I was made aware that I should include a note of word count and some warnings just incase, so I’ve gone back and edited part one to include that, as well as added them to this. Thank you so much for the response to part one, and I hope you like part two :) Also, some people asked me to tag them, so I have at the bottom.
Warnings: Very minor self doubt, heartache and slight intimidation?
Genre: Fluff
Word count: 1,680
It was the day after Snape moved you from Draco - and everything had felt slightly tense since. You didn’t talk to Draco for the rest of the day after what happened, not that it was his fault or you were mad at him in any way, but the comment from Professor Snape had made you question a few things:
‘Does he not like us being friends?’
‘Is it because I’m a Gryffindor?’
‘Does he want me to stay away from him?’
‘Am I bad for Draco?’
‘Am I bad for Draco?’ That one was the hardest to think about. Maybe Snape’s only trying to look after him by placing certain people in his life and taking others out. As much as it felt wrong not to have him in your company for even for a single day, if you had to be the one to be taken out - and that the pretty Slytherin girl would be the one to replace you - then the question of going through any hurt that came with the decision was answered: you would stay away, for his sake. You love him so much, but all you’ve ever really wanted is for him be happy, perhaps he’d be happier with somebody else.
You and Hermione entered the Great Hall, awaiting to have dinner together with Harry and Ron who were running late, but that was okay. Hermione, being the annoyingly lovely person she is, wanted to get there early so that she alone could hear everything about your ‘admiration for Draco’, as she put it. This also meant there were only a few other people in the Great Hall at the time, including Draco.
You hadn’t noticed him at first, but the Slytherin girl. She was sat with him and his usual entourage, which although you were in your new mindset of trying not to interfere, this seemed odd. It was unlike him to let someone into his world that quickly. You kept your look on them.
She was facing in your direction but didn’t see you enter. It looked as if she was trying force a giggle at something Draco had just said to Blaise - not that it was even meant to entertain her in the first place. Draco was faced the opposite direction and his face couldn’t be seen from your angle, but there was something about the way his body was hunched over; resting his elbows on the table, his left arm keeping his head propped up in his palm, head at a slight tilt to the right - it was different. It was sad. He looked sad.
While you were slowly following behind Hermione, who was busy deciding where to sit along the Gryffindor table, the girl directed her eyes from Draco to you and was now staring at you rather intensely, almost possessively. To this you immediately looked away. Your face became warm in a panic that Draco would see you as well. He did.
“Y/n!” Draco called out, cheerfully, contradicting his seemingly depressed state. Still looking away you pretended not to hear him until he called your name again. “Y/n!” You couldn’t of not heard him this time, he even caught the attention of Hermione.
You turned, offering a polite smile as he was already stood in front of you. He was extremely close to you so that he could only look down at you, and you up at him, but you decided to keep your sight to a near-distance spot on the floor.
“Y/n, are you alright? I didn’t see you after-” He stopped for a few seconds as he looked up from you to Hermione, who was glaring at him from a few feet away, then back to you. He lowered his tone realising who you were with. “…after what happened… yesterday. I was worried about you-”
“I’m fine, Draco.” You interrupted, dotting your eyes from the floor to him, not quite being able to look him in his eyes. “It’s okay, It’s… fine-look, I better go and sit with Hermione.” You said, then only did you look up at him.
It was obvious he was disappointed and confused, but denying to show any of this in front of Hermione he kept his expression blank. You stared into one another’s eyes for a moment before another voice sounded your name.
“Y/n, you coming to sit with us?” You and Draco broke out of the gaze you had created as he cleared his throat and looked away. You lowered your eyes from the tall, white haired boy in front of you to the ginger one whose voice it was interrupting you; Ron. He made himself noticed as he walked by the two of you to join Hermione, both of them stood focused on the two of you as they were deeply concerned. They didn’t want Draco messing with your feelings given the situation you were in, Ron now knowing this because Hermione had informed him last night.
Draco remained close to you - as if he trying to shield you from something. He took a deep breath in through his nose, lightly catching the scent of your hair, and stepped back. You already hated his absence.
“Sorry, Ron.” You said quietly, looking back to Draco. “I’m coming.” You continued, still on Draco, it was almost as if you saying it to him instead. Draco turned slowly and walked back to his seat. He made sure not to look at you.
You were still placed in the same position, but remembered Hermione and Ron were waiting for you so walked down the Gryffindor table and stopped at the seat place opposite Hermione. You didn’t sit straight away, she was still looking at you, the Slytherin girl. She must have seen the whole thing, and she looked displeased about it; just you being close to him. You replied to her look with the same one she was giving you and then lowered to sit by Hermione.
“Are you alright?” The two of them said at the same time, seeming a little embarrassed about it. You gave a sad smile.
“Please,” You then smiled more genuinely “just don’t worry about me. If this is anyone’s problem, it’s mine.”
“It’s okay, you know, if you want to talk about it.” Hermione offered politely as she looked up to you. ‘Tell her. Tell her you love him. Tell her it hurts.’ You thought, considering then to let it all out. Just as you were about to let the words escape your mouth Harry plonked himself down in the empty space next to Ron, startling you all.
“Y/n?” He said, rather surprised. “Y/f/n.” Then stating your name out loud. He coughed, realising that this could be considered rude, and started again. “Forgive me, It’s just, well, you’ve always been known as a good friend of Malfoy’s. I’m sure you wouldn’t be offended if I suggested you were only sat here to spy on me on behalf of him.” His last remark an obvious joke.
“That’s okay, Harry.” You smiled. “Not many of the other Gryffindor’s approve of our-” You stopped, reminded of your decision to stay away from Draco. “friendship.” You finished your sentence, coldly. Harry was polite, so he gave a small laugh. To take the pressure off of you Ron started talking to Harry about some upcoming quidditch game. After what just happened with Draco you weren’t in the mood to eat, leaving you to do nothing but look into the distance; at the door way.
You then noticed Draco and Blaise exiting the Great Hall, pacing quickly. Your eyes widened at the loss of him from your sight, but there was no sign of the girl behind them. A few seconds passed. She then stepped into the doorway you were still fixed on. Your eyes locked with hers.
‘He’ll never be yours.’ she mouthed, stopping between each word just to emphasise them. She couldn’t have said anything else, it was so clear, almost as if you could hear her words inside your head. She smirked and left. Your eyes began to blur, feeling the tears settle in but not yet drop.
“Y/n…” Hermione was concerned, but kept quite so that the boys didn’t hear her. It was then you realised she saw the whole thing. With the glare still over your eyes, humiliated, you got up and scrambled all your things together.
“I have to go.” You whispered, nearly choking on your words.
“No, y/n, stay, please.” Her voice was shaky, unsure of how to handle the situation. You only looked her way once.
“I’ll see you later, okay? I’m sorry.” And with that, you walked away, leaving Ron and Harry without explanation.
You were so eager to find somewhere to catch your breath you were almost running out of the hall. All the features of your face remained still, blank, as you blinked away a single small tear, dropping to the ground.
Draco and Blaise were stood in the corridor, both with arms crossed and Blaise talking loudly, trying to comfort him over something, though you were so focused on finding somewhere quiet they were oblivious to your sight. Draco saw you dash past behind Blaise, him unaware of you, but Draco kept his focus on your tracks.
Draco stopped Blaise’s pointless rambling, “She was crying.” He said, keeping his stare on you as you got further away.
“Who?” Blaise questioned and turned to see who Draco was looking at.
“Y/n.” Draco said as he left Blaise stood to face the wall, following you.
Hermione trailed after you by a few seconds, causing her and Draco to step into each others view. They both stopped and made eye contact from opposite sides of the corridor. Hermione gave him a disappointed look and turned to walk into the Great Hall, realising she could no longer see you. He turned to where he thought you were, seeing only empty space. He ran to the bottom of the corridor and looked down each pass way; empty. You were no where to be seen.
